Work Examples
Click this link to hear a Community Song created by 3rd Grade
For this activity, my third grades worked collaboratively to create a community song. This was one of their first steps towards composition and is the culmination of a series of lessons ending on March 25, 2022. For this activity we completed the following steps:
Review rhythms using quarter notes, eighth notes, half notes, and sixteenth notes. Students can create a four-beat rhythm using these note values.
Review pitches on the treble clef staff. Students can assign pitches for each note value in their previously completed rhythm.
Review instruments from the percussion family. In groups, students can work collaboratively to create a four-beat rhythm to accompany our class community composition.
The result is a bouncy, fun, and energetic song. These songs were often shared with families, used in the classroom, and even used as backing tracks to school social media posts.
